Municipal Hall
NEW: The Municipal Redevelopment Plan.
In April 2024 Central Saanich began proceedings to expropriate a 2.2‑acre (0.9 hectare) vacant site at the corner of Wallace Drive and Hovey Road. This was after negotiations to purchase the property failed. The Municipality wants the land for a new municipal hall and police and fire stations. The land was owned by Park Place Seniors Living, which planned to develop a long-term care facility. On January 20, 2025 this company filed legal action against Central Saanich, claiming that the land was assessed at $7.2 million, far more than the $4.64 million they received. The civil claim lists, among other things, disturbance damage, including but not limited to reasonable costs, expenses, and losses, directly attributable to this project, general damages, legal fees and appraisal costs. How can Council do an accurate assessment of the cost of the municipal redevelopment until this court case is settled? What happens to the large parcel of land where the municipal hall is now located? Will this be sold? If so, to whom and for what kind of development?
