Hovey Road Barn Owls
Barn Owls are on the Federal "Species at Risk" list. They are very rare on Vancouver Island. (Information from Provincial Biologist at BC Fish and Wildlife)
"The main threat facing Barn Owl habitat is residential and commercial land development and the associated road infrastructure. (Link below) Barn Owls live in a small barn at the house that would be adjacent to the development. This house would be the "orphaned" house and it is on ALR (Agricultural Land Reserve). They have been nesting on this site for 28 years. The owls have been studied, banded and photographed by specialists including University of British Columbia. Their nest would be adjacent to the development and construction. They also use the tall trees nearby to roost and hunt - trees that would sadly be cut down if this development is approved. Would the owls be detrimentally affected by 3 years of destruction, noise, pollution, heavy equipment and tree removal at this development? What do you think? (The distance between the building site property line and the nest is 22m or 72 ft). Activities likely to result in the destruction of critical habitat: "Deliberate removal (demolition or otherwise making inaccessible) of natural and human-made structures used by Barn Owl, Western Population, such that there is any loss of natural nesting/roosting habitat...
